In the official ranking of states based on women in government, Tennessee ranks 46th out of 50 states. And at the federal level, Tennessee has 9 congressional representatives in Washington – only one is a woman.

Black women in TN are 3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. TN ranks among the bottom in the nation for maternal health outcomes, and women in TN are living under a near-total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.

That’s why we are doing everything we can to support one of Tennessee’s leading pro-choice CHAMPIONS in a special election that will give Democrats a rare but important opportunity to secure another seat in the U.S. Congress. Why we’re feeling encouraged: New data came out last week highlighting an unprecedented shift in this district’s likelihood to elect a Democrat in a historically solid Republican region. Early-vote data shows an 80% drop in Republican turnout, while Democratic-leaning precincts across the district are dramatically overperforming expectations. Highly motivated Democrats and new or infrequent voters are being activated for this race (!!!!).

Aftyn is on the ballot against Matt Van Epps, a Trump-endorsed Republican who said he would “100% have the President’s back” if elected to Congress.

Additionally, he is adamantly anti-choice, stating that “every life is a gift from God,” and that he will stand “shoulder-to-shoulder” with Trump to fight against reproductive rights…

Before serving in the Tennessee state legislature, Aftyn organized with reproductive justice and healthcare access advocates across Tennessee and the South. She has worked closely with groups on the ground to expand access to healthcare, combat stigma, and defend reproductive freedom in some of the toughest turf in the country.

This is important: she told us that she has been able to accomplish more in her time as an elected lawmaker than she ever could have imagined as a rural organizer. We NEED her voice and her tireless determination in government where it belongs.
