The government shutdown is finally over—and now, we're hearing that one of the very first things House Republicans want to do after the holidays is push a gun-lobby-backed Concealed Carry Mandate that would override state protections.

John, this would force each state to allow people from other states—including domestic abusers, violent offenders, and people with no safety training—to carry hidden, loaded guns in public, even in states that wouldn't otherwise let them. Your lawmakers need to hear from you on this issue–tell them to vote NO on this dangerous bill.

Moms Demand Action had a historic election night in Virginia, with Abigail Spanberger making history as the first Moms Demand Action volunteer elected governor! Plus, all 13 volunteer candidates won their seats in the House of Delegates—meaning Moms volunteers will make up 20% of the Democratic Caucus and drive major progress on gun safety!

We also saw voters embrace gun safety leadership nationwide, with New Jersey electing Mikie Sherrill governor—a proven champion for preventing gun violence—and Pennsylvania voters choosing to retain Justices Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and David Wecht, reaffirming their commitment to safety, accountability, and a future free from gun violence.

Some states are now requiring schools to teach kids as young as five what to do if they find a gun—a lesson critics say is putting the burden of safety on children instead of adults. Arkansas, Tennessee, and Utah are rolling out games, videos, and classroom exercises to teach kids to "stop, don't touch, leave quickly, and tell an adult."

But Meg Beauregard of Everytown for Gun Safety warns, "Using the school day to teach kids about guns won't stop adults from leaving their firearms unsecured…If lawmakers were serious about protecting students, they'd pass laws that hold adults accountable, such as secure storage—not put the burden on kids to keep themselves safe."

Read the full AP article to see how these lessons are being implemented, and why experts say it's not enough.

Our new report, Disarming Fear: Debunking Myths of Defensive Gun Use, shatters the idea that guns keep families safe. Federal data shows defensive gun use is extremely rare—fewer than 1% of all personal and property crimes—and often makes situations more dangerous, while guns in the home put children and women at serious risk.

This report separates fear from fact, showing that the guns people buy to protect themselves can actually do more harm than good. Read the full report to see the data behind the myths and learn how to keep your family safe.

In a major victory for gun safety, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek signed a new law banning rapid-fire devices like bump stocks and Glock switches, keeping machine-gun-style firepower off Oregon streets. Thanks to the efforts of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action volunteers, this law also empowers local governments to prohibit firearms in municipal buildings, protecting civic spaces where Oregonians should feel safe.

"Machine gun conversion devices like Glock switches have no place in our state—or anywhere," said Alexa Hasman, volunteer with Moms Demand Action and member of the Everytown Survivor Network. "By signing this bill, Governor Kotek has helped close a dangerous loophole and made Oregon safer for families like mine."
