Friend,
Today marks 99 years since the Nineteenth Amendment, granting women the right to vote, was officially signed into law. The anniversary deserves celebration, but we also acknowledge that many women -- especially women of color -- continued to struggle for decades to secure their access to the ballot, and many continue that struggle today.
While we celebrate the advancement of women’s suffrage, we are also aware that we are still living with the repercussions of the systematic disenfranchisement of women -- especially women of color -- that took place for generations, and we know we cannot be complacent as Republicans continue in their efforts to roll back voting rights, invite dark money into our political system, and erode our Democracy.
That’s why, earlier this year I was proud to co-sponsor the For the People Act of 2019, a sweeping bill to improve voter access, protect the integrity of our elections, control political spending, and safeguard government ethics. Now, this landmark bill has passed the House and is sitting on Mitch McConnell’s desk. Without citizen action H.R. 1 it could die there, which is why I’m asking you to join me in demanding the Senate vote on this critical legislation >>

On this anniversary of the 19th Amendment, history shows us that the fight for access to free and fair elections is never truly over -- especially for marginalized communities. If we want a government that is truly representative of all the people, we must remain committed to expanding access and fighting efforts to disenfranchise entire communities.
