Let me tell you a story about this headline by the Lewiston Sun Journal, John…
(yep, that's me!)
During my time in the state legislature, I led on a variety of environmental and health issues and got asked to participate in an important demonstration study that tested chemicals in our bodies. I joined 12 other Mainers in the study that tested us for 84 chemicals that shouldn’t be in our bodies. To my shock, almost every single chemical showed up in my body – mercury, phthalates, BPA and many more.
I started to get fired up about what the chemical industry had done to my health and the health of my neighbors. After that, I sponsored successful legislation to ban flame retardants in furniture and then a comprehensive effort to take chemicals out of children’s products – called the Kid’s Safe Products Act.
The chemical industry spent over $1,000,000 to defeat those bills. They aired ads on TV. Maine was among the first states to take on the chemical industry and they didn’t want us to be an example. Despite huge lobbying and money spent against us, we passed the bills with huge bipartisan support.
Because that’s how you get big things done, John. Throughout my career, I’ve taken on big, important fights and worked to deliver solutions that matter. And I remain committed to meeting the challenges ahead with the same sense of purpose that have guided me throughout my life and career.
Here’s the bottom line: I’ve taken on big fights- and won – now I’m running for Governor of Maine to take on our state’s greatest challenges head on.
I’m facing my November end-of-month deadline tonight, and I still have about $1,200 left to raise. Your generous donations help us plan, hire staff, and buy supplies so we can get my message out to as many Maine people as possible. So John, before tonight at midnight, can I count on you to chip in today?
I know you’re busy, and I truly appreciate you taking a moment to read this. Every bit of support, no matter the size, makes a real difference.
Warmly,
Hannah
