Building No Kill Communities!

Dear John,

Right now, you have the ability to directly change the lives of animals bred, sold, and surviving in inhumane conditions.

End the puppy mill loophole and license Chicago breeders. Sham rescues and puppy mills are still all too commonly relied upon as a source for cats, dogs, and rabbits by a handful of our city’s pet stores. While 2014’s Chicago Pet Store Ordinance requires Chicago’s pet stores to purchase and sell animals from shelters or rescues, a loophole in the ordinance allows puppy mills to callously continue selling weeks-old, designer, and purebred puppies under the guise of a “rescue organization."

Help us close this loophole. Alderman Brian Hopkins has introduced an amended ordinance strengthening the language intended to bar inhumane cat, dog, and rabbit breeders from claiming they’re reputable rescues or shelters. In addition, this ordinance will ensure that all back yard breeders in the city must be licensed breeders, or have their pets spayed or neutered.
