Dear John,

As the days get shorter and the weather swings from cold to mild, the chancellor’s Budget had its own ups and downs. Read on for our reaction.

We recently launched a manifesto containing eight principles on how to green the energy grid in a countryside-friendly way. It’s essential if we want to power our future with clean energy and protect the landscapes we love.

With excitement, we announced our 2026 garden at the Royal Horticultural Society’s annual Chelsea Flower Show! We are delighted to be working with award-winning garden designer Sarah Eberle to highlight the vital ‘edgelands’ of our towns and cities.

In the meantime, our Hedgerow Heroes have been out digging and planting hedgerows this National Tree Week in counties up and down the country, boosting biodiversity and regenerating habitats for wildlife.

With the festive season fast approaching, why not give a gift that makes a difference? CPRE’s Gift membership helps power our movement and protect the countryside. We couldn’t do it without you.Update on the chancellor’s Budget

Rachel Reeves has delivered the much-anticipated 2025 Budget this week.

We welcome the commitment to upskill local planning departments. A properly funded planning system is essential in delivering homes and infrastructure that work for people and planet.

But this commitment achieves little if environmental protections are watered down in the Planning and Infrastructure Bill and, more recently, with nuclear infrastructure, which was endorsed in the Budget.

New nuclear infrastructure has no place in protected landscapes or National Parks. Instead of building energy infrastructure in treasured landscapes, the government should invest in rooftop solar and regenerate urban centres with affordable homes.

Our manifesto for Greening the Grid

We recently released our manifesto on what we think Greening the Grid could really look like.

Clean energy is key to tackling the climate emergency. To hit our 2030 clean power and 2050 net zero targets, we must ditch fossil fuels and start producing more clean electricity than ever before.

With lots more electricity moving around, we must build and upgrade the infrastructure to move clean power from where it’s made to where it’s needed.

We want to see this system built in a way that protects nature and supports communities. Our manifesto lists eight core principles we think will help us quickly build a clean, fair, and countryside-friendly energy system. One that powers our future while protecting and regenerating the landscapes we love.

CPRE at Chelsea Flower Show

🌸 We're heading to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show! 🌸

To mark 100 years of championing the countryside, we’ll be unveiling a show garden next year at the Chelsea Flower Show. Created by award-winning garden designer Sarah Eberle and generously supported by the grant-giving charity, Project Giving Back ([link removed]). The garden celebrates our legacy and looks ahead to the future of nature and landscapes.

Our garden, 'On the Edge', celebrates the countryside as a living, shared space that shapes our wellbeing, our communities and our future, shining a light on the overlooked 'edgelands' of our towns and cities.

Our Hedgerow Heroes are busy this Tree Week

🌳 As National Tree Week celebrates its fiftieth year, it's the perfect opportunity to spotlight our amazing Hedgerow Heroes who have been out digging this week in Herefordshire, Cheshire, Avon & Bristol, Hertfordshire, Derbyshire and Sussex!

Communities across the country have helped plant over 125,000 trees in hedgerows.

These trees help wildlife, strengthen our landscapes, protect against flooding and lock in carbon. Together, we’re making our countryside stronger.

Here’s to a future filled with wonderful trees. 💚
