John,
While millions of families stretch their budgets this Black Friday, the biggest retail corporations enjoy something no shopper ever gets: a permanent tax markdown. Our research reveals that eight of the largest retail chains paid an average federal tax rate of just 17.5% after the Trump tax law, compared to 31.3% before it. They operate in a different economy than the rest of us.
These corporations generate staggering profits. Amazon recorded $159 billion in U.S. earnings in recent years. Home Depot reached $115 billion, and Lowe’s made $54 billion. Instead of using that success to lower prices or pay workers fairly, they kept consumer costs high and redirected their savings to shareholders. Home Depot poured $49 billion into stock buybacks. Costco delivered $20 billion in dividends. Families are getting rising prices, investors get windfalls.
The executives at the top benefit too. One Trump-era tax change that Republicans extended helped CEOs save as much as $35 million on their own taxes. While workers handle holiday rushes for low pay and inconsistent hours, corporate leaders walk away with massive personal discounts that have nothing to do with hard work and everything to do with a rigged tax code.
We cannot allow corporations to treat the tax system like their personal loyalty rewards program. Our distorted tax system drains revenue from schools, healthcare, housing, transportation, and other public services families rely on.
We need your support to expose these corporate tax abuses and demand laws that require the wealthiest corporations and CEOs to contribute their fair share. Please make a contribution today to help confront corporate tax avoidance and support our campaign for a fair tax system.
Retail giants want the public focused on limited-time discounts while they secure permanent tax privileges. They raise prices, squeeze workers, and celebrate their ability to shrink their tax bills. Our communities lose billions while some of the country’s richest companies call it smart business.
We won’t let them get away with it. We are organizing, investigating, and mobilizing voters to fight back against the Trump tax giveaways and hold corporate giants accountable.
We need your help to expand this work and challenge the influence of wealthy executives who use loopholes to protect their fortunes.
Chip in now to help us confront the retailers that treat the tax code like a holiday sale that never ends.
