Dear Friend,
To say that yesterday was a day of highs and lows would be a vast understatement.
To start with the good news, for many months I have been hoping that our wonderful former Green Member of Parliament for Kitchener Centre, Mike Morrice, would agree to join me in the leadership team for the Green Party of Canada. Last night at a rally for Mike in Kitchener Centre, I was overjoyed to announce that he has joined as Deputy Leader, alongside Rainbow Eyes (Angela Davidson), and me, as the leadership team for the Federal Green Party of Canada.
Mike is out knocking on doors. He and his team are ready for an election, whenever it comes, to reclaim the seat in Kitchener Centre after a narrow defeat to the Conservatives during the spring election. Mike has been a champion for people with disabilities across Canada. He has also been a leader, locally and nationally, in the fight to ensure that housing is a right for all Canadians.
But obviously, the national news that dominated yesterday was darker.
The much–hyped agreement between Canada and Alberta was signed in Calgary by our Prime Minister and the Premier of Alberta. I did not expect it to be good news, but I was completely unprepared for the depth of the betrayal in that MOU. Obviously, so was my old friend and former colleague in the environmental movement, the Honourable Stephen Guilbeault, who resigned from Cabinet as a result.
The MOU allows the federal government to commit billions of dollars to increasing production of oil and gas in Alberta, to nuclear reactors in Alberta, to new pipelines across British Columbia, and lifting the oil tanker ban on the northwest coast of British Columbia. It is a betrayal of our climate commitments, of international law, of domestic law, and of the rights of Indigenous peoples. It sets the stage for abandoning Canada’s climate policy altogether.
It is hard to describe the mix of emotions with yesterday’s events. I struggle with them today.
Just as Jody Wilson-Raybould quit Trudeau’s cabinet, the personal integrity and political courage of Stephen Guilbeault needs to be recognized. We need Green members of Parliament more than ever. We need Mike Morrice back in Parliament. And, we would welcome any Liberal MPs who recognize that the promises they ran on now lie in ashes.
Please, if you can, make a donation today to help us build on yesterday’s good news, welcoming Mike Morrice as our new Deputy Leader. It will support our collective work in Parliament and across the country.

Deep appreciation for your continued support. I remain resolved to keep up the fight in solidarity with Indigenous peoples to protect Canada and the planet.
With love and gratitude,
Elizabeth
