** Bastille Day Reads
------------------------------------------------------------
As you know, Tuesday, July 14, was Bastille Day.
Bastille Day is one of those significant historical events that millions of people recognize without really understanding why.
You probably know it involved the fortress prison in Paris and had something to do with the French Revolution.
Because Bastille Day commemorates a truly historic day—one that carries plenty of misrepresentations—we pulled together some suggested readings to help you make sense of it.
Ready to slide into your friends’ DMs with little-known history facts?
Let’s Go:
* Discover the actual events and motives ([link removed]) behind the storming of the Bastille in Time magazine. Spoiler: it wasn’t really about freeing political prisoners.
* Explore father of conservatism Edmund Burke’s reflections ([link removed]) on the French Revolution. Or, if you aspire to be a scholar, you can read his own words ([link removed]) for yourself.
* Compare the American and French Revolutions ([link removed]) in National Affairs. Many Americans think Bastille Day is just like our Independence Day, and that both revolutions were similar. But two very different spirits drove them. Find out why.

** Do We Learn from History? ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
You’ve heard this famous phrase by philosopher George Santayana, right?
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
Turns out most people have misunderstood it.
What Santayana Actually Meant
In the Imaginative Conservative, Nayeli Riano reveals the true meaning of Santayana’s viral quote:
“Santayana emphasizes retentiveness over change, arguing that progress can only be judged by individuals who retain awareness, knowledge, and memory of their past. When we seek absolutely change, he warns, we [no] longer know what to improve and by what standard. The consequences of neglecting our experience, which includes that collective experience handed down to us by our ancestors, is that we remain in an intellectual, moral, and spiritual ignorance that Santayana calls the perpetual infancy of savages.”
