John,

Last night, Capistrano Unified School District laid out their reopening plan for the 2020-2021 school year. We would like to congratulate them for their efforts in creating a thoughtful plan to get Orange County’s second largest school District opened for in-person instruction. Allowing options for ALL parents in San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Mission Viejo, Rancho Mission Viejo, Ladera Ranch, and Las Flores, this plan is based on four main components:

  1. Health and Safety (for students and faculty)
  2. Curriculum and Instruction
  3. Mental Health and Diversity
  4. Innovative Programs

The plan includes a serious effort to maintain proper hygiene and necessary precautions to ensure schools are safe for students, staff and parents. There are also options for parents to decide what they feel is best for their children, including a process to exempt children from the mask requirement. I commend President Jim Reardon and all the members of the Board of Trustees, as well as Kirsten Vital, Superintendent of Capo Unified, for their determination, passion, and willingness to innovate to meet the needs of our students and our community.

Stay well,

Brian Maryott
