Dear John,

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving! I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed the day together and ate (lots of) turkey. I know I sure did...

This year hasn't been easy. With Republicans’ historic cuts to health care and food assistance, the rise of political violence, tough times in farm country and a President who seems to wreak havoc wherever he goes – there have certainly been some difficult moments. That being said, there’s still a lot to be grateful for.

First, I want to say that I'm thankful for you! It is an incredible honor to serve my constituents. Minnesota’s Second District is truly some place special, and it’s the people who make it so. Whether it's hearing from you at my town halls, working with local leaders to bring tax dollars back to our communities or simply hanging out at local small businesses – I love being your Representative in Congress.

The only reason that I can do what I do for you though is because of my family. I’m thankful for my wife Cheryl, my four sons and two daughter-in-laws, my three grandsons and (of course) my pets Sophie and Dakota. The babies call me “Mimi,” and hands down that’s my favorite title. I’m also blessed to have my mom, dad and stepparents in my life as well. And in October, we celebrated my Mamaw’s 99th birthday. I know how lucky I am to still have one living grandparent, and this Thanksgiving we are all grateful for the gift of her love.

I also want to express my gratitude for all the local leaders, public safety officers, teachers and so many others who make our district a better place. Your work doesn’t go unnoticed.

Finally, I want to say that I’m thankful for everyone who is making their voice heard right now. Like I said – we are living through extremely challenging times. Every week, I hear from hundreds of my constituents who want to share their opinion or story. It’s those messages that keep me focused and grounded – and reassure me that we are picking righteous fights to make our country a better place. If you would like to share your story, or need help with a federal agency, please don’t hesitate to contact my office here.

Until next time,
