A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan
This week we’re excited to announce that Nottingham is one of the potential host cities for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2035. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Nottingham’s sporting heritage on a global stage, celebrating football and community pride.
There’s lots of great things happening in Nottingham – Nottingham Forest welcomed European football to our city on Thursday, we have a festive Wollaton Winter Light Trail which started this week and a fantastic Christmas market right in the heart of the city. This is a wonderful reminder of how vibrant and magical our city feels at this time of year.
As a Council, we’re continuing to make real progress in our improvement journey and this week I was in Parliament with the Council’s Chief Executive to discuss how we keep this going with Baroness Sharon Taylor, Parliamentary Under-Secretary in Government. Finally, our proposal to Government on LGR is in – this is a significant milestone for us and I’ll continue to update you as things progress.

The FA, Irish FA, Scottish FA and FA of Wales have officially submitted their joint bid for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035. The tournament would be the largest single-sport event ever staged in the UK, and the first FIFA World Cup hosted in the country since 1966.
The bid includes 22 proposed stadiums – 16 in England (including Nottingham’s City Ground), three in Wales, two in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland – across 16 host cities.
Built on the powerful vision of “All Together” – a rallying cry for women’s football and sport more broadly to empower worldwide – it represents a fantastic opportunity to showcase Nottingham’s sporting heritage on a global stage, celebrating football and community pride.
The Christmas Market at Nottingham Castle opens today, with more than 90 stalls from local independent traders, plus tasty food and drink, family fun, and live entertainment.
Opening times
- Friday 28 November: 11am - 8pm (last admission 6.30pm)
- Saturday 29 November: 10am - 7pm (last admission 5.30pm)
- Sunday 30 November: 10am - 4pm (last admission 2.30pm)
Online tickets are still available, priced at £2 per adult and £1 per child (plus booking fees). Peak Saturday and Sunday timeslots are nearly sold out, but there is good availability for today and this evening. With last admission at 6.30pm tonight, why not visit for some late-night Christmas shopping and after-work drinks?
Once online tickets are sold out, you will be charged the £15 Nottingham Castle standard admission plus the £2 event ticket price on the door (subject to capacity).

You may see orange across Nottingham this week, the international colour for ending violence against women and girls.
Wearing orange is a symbol of solidarity, but real change comes from action:
- Challenging harmful attitudes
- Supporting survivors
- Knowing where help is available
- Creating safer spaces in our communities
Together, we can build a safer Nottingham for everyone.
If you need help or advice:
- Juno Women’s Aid: 0808 800 0340 (24/7)
- Notts SVS Support Services: 0115 941 0440
- Equation (Men’s Service): 0800 9956 999
The Council has reached a milestone in its improvement journey following the publication of the Commissioner’s latest progress report which shows that the authority continues to make improvement across parts of the Council.
Council Leader Neghat Khan, and Chief Executive, Sajeeda Rose visited Parliament on Thursday to discuss Nottingham’s improvement journey. Baroness Sharon Taylor, Parliamentary Under-Secretary, was supportive of the progress we have already made, acknowledging the hard work of officers.
New legislation means that all postal voters must now reapply every three years to continue voting by post.
Over the next two weeks, we’ll be contacting affected voters by email, letter or phone. Around 90% of postal voters in Nottingham will need to take action.
If you receive a notification, please reapply as soon as possible. It only takes a few minutes.
The all-new Wollaton Winter Light Trail is now lighting up Wollaton Hall & Deer Park, transforming the grounds into a magical world of colour, sound and festive storytelling.
Created by leading event producers WePop, this spectacular illuminated trail features brand-new installations, interactive moments and immersive scenes designed to delight visitors of all ages. It’s already proving to be one of Nottingham’s most exciting festive experiences.
Along the way you’ll also find: ✨ Festive bars and cosy mini chalets ✨ Local independent food vendors ✨ Children’s funfair rides ✨ Marshmallow toasting under the stars
And importantly, the prices are some of the best in the region. With Super Off-Peak tickets starting from just £12.50 for children/seniors and £17 for adults, plus family tickets from £50, it’s a brilliant, great-value Christmas day out. Infant (0–2) and carer tickets remain free.
The trail runs until 31 December, so there's plenty of time to experience the magic.
Nottingham City Council will be helping city residents again by providing another £1 million of food supermarket vouchers providing extra support for vulnerable people over the winter months through the Government’s Household Support Fund (HSF).
Another 10,000 vouchers worth £100 will be available for residents to apply for in the next application window from 10am on 1 December to midnight on 7 December. Residents can apply for these even if they have already received a voucher from the HSF scheme since April 2025.
The full programme of support and go live dates, along with details of how residents can apply for vouchers, can be found on our website.

LGR proposals submitted for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire
On Thursday, we submitted our LGR proposal for the region – known currently as Bii.
The proposal responds to the government’s criteria, but also directly responds to feedback from our residents, partners and businesses, and creates a unique footprint that focusses service delivery of one unitary authority on an urban conurbation and a second unitary authority serving the more rural areas to better reflect how our people and businesses live and work and visit.

It's a Happy Friday for our wonderful Green Heart!
The popular city-centre space, which opened in September last year, topped the Landscape and Public Realm Project category at last night’s Architects’ Journal Architect Awards 2025 (27 November).
Judges had visited Nottingham two months ago for a site visit of the wider Broad Marsh area, which has undergone a major transformation in the past few years.
In handing out the award, they said the Green Heart ‘breathes Nottingham’, highlighting the ‘remarkably transformative effect of the landscape, which re-energises the city centre with a beautiful and biodiverse public space’.
