Celebrate Small Business Saturday with a Winter Wonderland
Oldham town centre will be buzzing on Saturday 6 December as we celebrate Small Business Saturday alongside another magical Festive Saturday.
Small Business Saturday is a national campaign encouraging everyone to support independent shops, local traders, and family-run businesses in the run-up to Christmas.
It’s the perfect opportunity to explore the town centre’s brilliant small businesses and we’re encouraging everyone to get involved. It can be as simple as picking up something from one of our market traders or enjoying lunch with a vendor from the Egyptian Room.
To make the day even more special, the town centre will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland, filled with free entertainment and walkabout performers bringing snowy magic to every corner, including The Living Snow Globe, stilt-walkers the Jacks of Frost, the Snowball Sprites and a free Santa’s Grotto in the Market Hall from 12–4pm.

Standing together against violence towards women and girls
We marked White Ribbon Day on Wednesday 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women — a time to reflect and stand together against violence towards women and girls.
Every woman and girl deserves to feel safe in her own home, on our streets and in our community.
If something feels wrong, speak up. If someone needs support, stand with them.
Change starts with each of us, and together we can build an Oldham where everyone is protected and respected.

A greener Oldham is taking shape
Cllr Abdul Jabbar, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, Corporate Services and Sustainability, recently met with staff from Groundwork to see the new green spaces across the town centre
We’re working with Groundwork to add more planters, rain gardens, window boxes and water butts that collect rainwater. These will make the area greener, help wildlife thrive and reduce flooding and heat.
Schools, residents and local businesses are also getting involved in activities that show how nature can improve the town centre.

We’re investing in Royton’s future
Following the restoration of Royton Town Hall & Library, we’re now moving ahead with the next stage of investment in the town centre.
Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, joined colleagues from the Bee Network and Casey (the contractors delivering the works) to speak with residents & traders about the improvements starting in January.
These plans were shaped by public drop ins and consultation events held in 2024 and 2025.
The works will upgrade pavements and crossings, improve access to the precinct, create safer walking and cycling routes, reduce congestion and support local businesses. The changes will make Royton easier to move around and improve the look and feel of the town centre.
