Dear John,
It’s been a very busy couple of months. We managed a big win at the UN climate talks, despite the many missed opportunities by official negotiators. There have been some positive steps forward on UK climate action, but also steps backward with the government's new planning law, which threatens UK wildlife.
Read on for the highs and lows.
The UN climate summit – our future legacy?
The UN climate talks didn't achieve everything the world desperately needs. Not even close. But thanks to people power, including thousands of you, we did secure one big win – the agreement of the Just Transition mechanism.
In simple terms, this will focus on making sure climate plans are created that everyone benefits from. Such as cheaper, clean energy and well-paid jobs. Given the UK government was trying to block it this time last week, it's an amazing example of what can be achieved when we take action together.

Global day of action
On Saturday 15 November, people around the world joined in solidarity for the COP30 Global Day of Action. Over 50 of our local action groups organised or took part in events around the UK. Including these interesting characters in Manchester.

The Big Climate Plan – big enough?
The UK government’s climate plan finally arrived in October. Our campaign for a bold, fair climate plan has been nearly 5 years of hard work and massive support from you – thank you.
The plan isn’t perfect. But it has the potential to deliver cheaper bills, warmer homes and thousands of good green jobs. That’s something you should be really proud of.

Wildlife on the brink
The government's new planning law is going to be passed any day now. And we're very sorry to say that it will weaken vital protections for wildlife. And give developers more freedom to destroy wild and green spaces.
But we’re grateful for the more than 100,000 of you who stood up against the government for letting developers trash nature. Rest assured, we won’t let your voices go unheard and will continue to hold the government to account.
Budget 2026
The budget was a mixed bag for the environment. But it was encouraging to see the government reaffirming its commitment to no new oil and gas licences. And a North Sea jobs service to help workers transition into other well-paid jobs.
Those calling for more North Sea extraction must be honest: it won’t cut bills, but it will fuel the climate crisis. Future generations won't thank us for drilling for more oil and gas when the warning signs of climate breakdown are plain to see.

Runway to nowhere
The UK government has said it backs Heathrow Airport Limited's proposal for a third runway. This would be like bolting an airport the size of Gatwick onto Heathrow. That would be disastrous for the local community, for the UK and the world.
A lot still needs to happen before the plans are pushed through – and the plans will need to pass the government’s own tests on climate, noise and air pollution, and growth.
So we need to act fast and speak loudly. If you haven’t already, tell Rachel Reeves "no" to the third runway.

A win in Norway
Our friends at Young Friends of the Earth Norway (Natur og Ungdom) and Greenpeace Nordic have scored a massive victory against oil extraction. They took Norway's government to court for granting new oil concessions in 3 oil fields in the North Sea.
The government hadn’t informed the public of the massive risks new oil extraction brings. So, the court ruled that licences for these fields were illegal.
The oil from these fields would release an estimated 565 million tons of carbon dioxide, so this is great news. And it serves as an antidote to the “drill baby drill” politics making noise around the world. Congratulations Young Friends of the Earth Norway.
That’s it for now – we’ll be in touch soon with news on how to double your impact with the Big Give. And we’ll have a good look back on the year of struggle and success that’s been 2025, and then… see you in 2026!
Thanks,
Aleanna,
Friends of the Earth
