As many families gather around full tables this Thanksgiving, millions
across the country are facing a very different reality. USDA data shows
that 47.4 million people live in food-insecure households, meaning they
struggled to afford enough food at some point during the year.
This year, the Trump administration announced it will discontinue the food
insecurity survey, and some experts have stated that ending the survey
will make it harder to track and understand the scale of food insecurity.
Without the annual report, non-profit organizations and policymakers won't
have a clear lens on the scale of hunger in America and how to prevent it.
With the rise of food insecurity in our country, organizations like
Feeding America and its network of more than 200 food banks and 60,000
pantries, and meal programs have stood on the front lines making sure
families do not go hungry. Their work is even more critical now,
especially at a time when many families are struggling with rising food
prices and changes to nutrition-assistance programs that happened just
last month.
