John,
This Thanksgiving, let’s fight colonialism by supporting Indigenous-led organizations.
Could you chip in to American Indian Health and Family Services, a nonprofit health and wellness center that makes holistic healthcare accessible to Indigenous people in my state of Michigan?
For 47 years American Indian Health and Family Services has strengthened the health and wellbeing of Michigan’s urban Indigenous community through high-quality, accessible care that integrates traditional healing and cultural practices. This photo is from one of their annual pow wows:
American Indian Health and Family Services’ work is essential, especially because colonialism and racism are still impacting Indigenous people across the United States—leading to major disparities in health between Native and non-Native folks.
For example, our Indigenous neighbors suffer from higher rates of diabetes, asthma, and heart disease, and they have up to 3x higher rates of suicide than any other racial/ethnic group in the United States.
American Indian Health and Family Services reconnects Native Americans and Alaska Natives with community and Indigenous spirituality, which helps reduce suicide risk.
The nonprofit also provides trauma-informed counseling, culturally competent talking circles, and statewide suicide prevention programs—along with other life-saving community services and medical and behavioral healthcare.
American Indian Health and Family Services provides services to all people in need, regardless of background or financial means. And right now, they’re fundraising to expand to a new campus so they can double their impact.
Near public transportation, this new campus will serve twice as many people; offer new services like dental care and a pharmacy; and include a youth center, an outdoor garden with a traditional sweat lodge, and space for on-site events like American Indian Health and Family Services’ annual pow wow.
This Thanksgiving, please donate as generously as you can to support American Indian Health and Family Services and begin to address centuries of injustice.
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your secure donation will go through immediately, with 100% going directly to American Indian Health and Family Services
Thank you for standing up for health equity and supporting our Native neighbors as well as healthcare for all. To learn more about this incredible service provider, please check out my email from yesterday.
In solidarity,
Rashida

John,
As we approach Thanksgiving, now is a crucial time to support Indigenous-led organizations.
I particularly want to lift up Native-led healthcare because Native Americans face major health disparities compared to non-Natives.
Centuries of colonial and racist policies have contributed to chronic stress, discrimination, trauma, and poverty—taking a toll on Indigenous people’s health.
This issue is particularly urgent as Trump and Republicans keep cutting food assistance and healthcare, which Native families depend on. These actions also violate the U.S. government’s treaty responsibilities to Tribes, such as providing food and healthcare in exchange for stealing Tribal lands.
Native healthcare providers are stepping up—such as the nonprofit American Indian Health and Family Services, which has strengthened the health and wellbeing of Michigan’s urban Indigenous community for 47 years.
This essential service provider is fundraising right now to keep meeting our community’s growing needs.
Will you help heal centuries of injustice and uplift Native families this Thanksgiving by chipping in to American Indian Health and Family Services?
This Native-led, Detroit-based nonprofit health and wellness center provides high-quality, accessible, and holistic care that integrates traditional healing and cultural practices.
Here’s a photo from one of their community pow wows:
Supporting American Indian and Alaska Native families as well as other underserved communities in our region, American Indian Health and Family Services makes sure not to turn anyone away.
They serve uninsured people by providing discounts and sliding scale fees based on income, and offer transportation as needed to bring people to programs and appointments.
But American Indian Health and Family Services is limited by their aging facility’s space constraints, so they’re fundraising to build a new campus.
This new campus is near public transportation and will serve twice as many people; offer new services like dental care and a pharmacy; and include a youth center, an outdoor garden with a traditional sweat lodge, and space for on-site events like their annual pow wow.
This Native American Heritage Month, can you support Indigenous sovereignty, wellness, and health equity by donating to American Indian Health and Family Services today?

Currently, American Indian Health and Family Services provides:
-
Medical care such as primary care, preventative screenings, maternal health services, pediatric care, and health education including traditional herbal medicine classes
-
Behavioral healthcare such as mental health services that respect traditional healing approaches and reinforce cultural identity, trauma-informed counseling, substance abuse treatment and recovery support, and statewide suicide prevention outreach
-
Community health and family wellness services such as nutrition education, fitness and cooking and gardening classes, youth programs, safe community spaces, elder support, cultural workshops, and seasonal ceremonies
With your support, these offerings will expand even further.
While focusing on improving health access and outcomes for American Indians and Alaska Natives in our region, American Indian Health and Family Services also provides care for all people in need—regardless of ethnicity, nationality, gender, race, religion, age, sexual orientation, or financial means.
Please support American Indian Health and Family Services’ essential work with a generous contribution today.
Thank you so much. I’ve been honored to secure $1.5 million for American Indian Health and Family Services through legislation, and to work alongside Native leaders in the fight for environmental and social justice.
Together we’ll continue fighting back against colonialism and racism while pushing the U.S. government to follow through on its responsibilities to Tribes.
In solidarity,
Rashida
