november Newsletter

‌

Neighbors and Colleagues,

Your team at ADL D.C. worked hard this month to address several critical local issues, including the horrendous protest last week in Union Station and divisive efforts underway to pressure Alexandria City Council to pass a BDS resolution. In November alone, we met with Jewish leaders in Richmond, presented at national conferences, distributed reports to dozens of superintendents, and conducted media interviews, helping protect our community from all forms of hate and harassment.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg in our strategy combating antisemitism. Your support is critical - as we move into the next calendar year, you can expect your priorities represented in our actions. We have a lot of work to do and need you in these challenging times.

This Thanksgiving, the team and I are grateful for you and our growing community of upstanders and allies. Please read our comprehensive newsletter below for more updates from your ADL D.C. team.

Best wishes,
Tali

Short Dialogues with AI Reduce Belief in Antisemitic Conspiracy Theories
An ADL-sponsored team of researchers found that a brief conversation with an experimental AI debunking tool has the potential to reduce antisemitic conspiracy beliefs by 16% and improve attitudes toward Jews among initially unfavorable participants by 25%. The experimental chatbot provided factual information and evidence-based counter arguments to antisemitic rhetoric. Could this be a solution to curbing antisemitism in AI?

🤖 40% Success Rate: How Extremists Are Using Your Favorite AI Tools Right Now

A new ADL study reveals that major AI video generators (including tools from Google, OpenAI, and Hedra) produced antisemitic and extremist content at least 40% of the time when tested with hateful prompts, despite existing safeguards meant to prevent such outputs. The platforms generated disturbing videos depicting antisemitic conspiracy theories like "weather control" machines operated by Jewish individuals, references to violent extremist networks, and even cartoon-style content promoting groups known for exploiting minors. While OpenAI's newest Sora 2 model showed the best content moderation by refusing 60% of problematic prompts, the original Sora 1 refused none, raising serious concerns about how these increasingly sophisticated and user-friendly tools could be weaponized to spread hate and recruit young people to extremist ideologies. But what specific steps can tech companies realistically take to stay ahead of bad actors who constantly evolve their tactics to bypass content filters? Read more here.

🔍 House Launches Nationwide Investigation into K-12 Antisemitism, ADL Responds

ADL has welcomed the House Committee on Education & the Workforce's announcement of a nationwide investigation into antisemitism in K-12 schools—and the findings are shocking . ADL CEO & National Director Jonathan Greenblatt praised the initiative as a critical step in addressing what he called "the rising tide" of antisemitic harassment facing Jewish students across America. A December 2024 survey revealed a staggering reality: 71% of Jewish parents reported their child had experienced an antisemitic incident at school. Even more alarming, ADL's Audit of Antisemitic Incidents documented over 1,000 incidents in K-12 schools in 2023 alone, with antisemitic incidents surging by more than 400 percent since 2020. As this crisis continues to escalate in classrooms nationwide, ADL has committed to working with federal investigators to push for sweeping reforms.
