[ [link removed] ]MADDOW BLOG: Why a special election in Tennessee is suddenly generating
unexpected attention
John, if progressive Aftyn Behn wins the special congressional
election in Tennessee on Tuesday, the shockwave will roar through the
political world like an earthquake. Here’s why this longshot race should
be on your radar.
This is a deep red district. In 2024, Trump won it by 22 points. These are
the voters who repeatedly sent right-wing extremist Marsha Blackburn to
the House.
But the latest polls show Aftyn Behn running neck and neck with her
Republican opponent – within the margin of error. We have to be honest
here. Districts like this are really hard to flip. But if Aftyn does it,
the impact will be enormous.
[ [link removed] ]Aftyn Behn’s team is all-hands-on-deck knocking on doors the next 6
days to Get Out The Vote. If you can chip in right now, they will put your
donation to work literally within hours.
If Aftyn wins or even comes close to flipping this seat, it will show
what’s possible when the Democratic establishment stops rejecting and
starts embracing a new generation of visionary leaders who challenge
billionaires and corporate corruption and speak directly to working
families.
In a district that hasn’t sent a Democrat to Congress since 1980, Aftyn is
saying to voters what too many in the Democratic establishment won’t:
"Billionaires and greedy corporations have rigged our system…it’s not left
versus right, it’s top versus bottom."
"If we don’t bring change to Congress, the billionaires and bought out
politicians will continue to rig the system against us."
It’s not just the voters who are noticing. Aftyn is being supported by
trusted organizations like End Citizens United and Congressional
Progressive Caucus Leaders Maxwell Frost and Pramila Jayapal.
So, yes, this race is a longshot. But it is also a hell of an opportunity.
