As Secretary of State, I know that Michigan’s elections are safe, secure, and the results we see are an accurate reflection of the will of the people. Period.

So I wanted you to know about the latest ploy from Michigan Republicans and ask for you to help me call it what it is: a dangerous scheme to get in the way of our free and fair elections.

Let's be clear about the facts: several of my predecessors have run for office while completing their term as Michigan’s Secretary of State. Candice Miller ran for Congress in 2002. Ruth Johnson ran for State Senate in 2018. The law hasn't changed. The facts haven't changed. And the commitment of over 1500 local election officials to free, fair, and secure elections won't change either.

Getting the Justice Department involved, led by Pam Bondi, a former lawyer for Donald Trump himself, is a way to breed more uncertainty, more chaos, and more skepticism about our election results.

These shenanigans have one goal and one effect: to undermine trust in our elections and our democracy. And I won’t stand for it.

And what’s more, this rhetoric potentially puts hardworking election officials in harm’s way (I’ve unfortunately been there).

I am deeply committed to safe and transparent elections — now and always. And the way these GOP lawmakers are acting suggests that they’d rather politicize our elections and play footsie with Trump than work across the aisle to protect our democracy. That’s exactly why we need to keep them far away from the governor’s office.
