A short note of gratitude

When times are tough, simple joys are especially important.

Hey y’all, with Thanksgiving right around the corner and the holiday season almost in full swing, I’m doing my best to find (and share!) joy and gratitude wherever I can.

Most of all, I’m grateful for my wife, Aly, and the two healthy, growing, curious, kind little boys we’re raising. I’ve said this before, but it’s important to say it often: The most important jobs I will ever have are father and husband. (This is a throwback from our wedding, and it always makes me smile.)

As our kids get older, it’s exciting to see the family traditions we’re building become more solidified. Before they came around, I’d spend my Thanksgiving watching (or playing) football. I spent one memorable Thanksgiving in Detroit, playing against the Lions. Nowadays, my sons love seeing all the floats in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, so we watch that together (and then we flip to football).

What else am I looking forward to this year? The food, of course! Turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pie (pumpkin and pecan) – I’m here for every bit of it.

But this year, I’m also thinking about how much more families in Texas and across the country are paying for our Thanksgiving meals, our holiday gifts, and the travel to see our loved ones.

From the grocery store to the gas pump, costs are higher than ever, and now there’s the added pressure of health care subsidies potentially being left to expire. Immigrant families are living in fear as ICE raids our communities. Free speech and the future of our democracy have never felt more tenuous.

In tough times like these, the simple moments of joy and gratitude are more important than ever. They fuel and fortify us for the fights ahead.

So this week, I hope you can take some time for whatever it is that brings you joy. I hope you are able to relax with loved ones. And I hope that, like me, you’re preparing yourself to fight for change in the days and weeks ahead – because while I truly believe real change is possible, I also know it only happens when we, the people, stand together and demand it.

We’re so much stronger when we act together. That reminds me of one more thing I’m grateful for: YOU, reading these messages, taking part in this campaign and our democracy, fighting for what’s right, and never, ever giving up.

THANK YOU!! More soon.

Colin

P.S. If you’d like to share what brings you joy or what you’re thankful for this year, I’d love to read about it in the comments!
