Dear Green American,
This year has had no shortages of questionable corporate behavior. Just this morning, I learned that companies like Walmart and Target are starting “personalized pricing”—a cuter way to say that a company will offer a different discount for you and someone else based on your purchase history, demographics, and perceived willingness to pay. For example, your friend might pay $10 for a phone charger, but you might pay $20 for the same charger, based on your value to the company. That’s dystopian, to put it nicely. And it follows from both companies rolling back previous commitments to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Corporations have reached all new levels of greed. They’re not the ones struggling this holiday season—we are. This Black Friday, we aren’t buying it.

You know who isn’t using personalized pricing? Small businesses. The people that run small businesses are more like you and me than corporate giants. Small businesses owners and workers are real people, with real impact, unlike Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Meta—all of which line their pockets with our tax dollars for their corporate tax breaks. If there’s any place I could purchase from this holiday season, it would be from people like me and you, who use their earnings to support their families.
The holidays are about unity and care between the people and communities we value. This winter, we are saying NO to corporate greed and destruction. And we’re saying YES to small, green businesses that actually care about you, humanity, and the planet.
