Dear John,

At a time when we look forward to spending time with loved ones and celebrating what we are thankful for, the Trump administration continues its relentless attacks on immigrants and the ability for families to access critical benefits. Instead of inspiring hope and safety, the administration is insistent on creating chaos, confusion, and uncertainty.

As advocates, we must remain focused on the work to be done to protect our communities and push back on unprecedented attacks. PIF continues to respond to the latest public charge proposals and any additional threats to immigrant families. Read below for our latest resources, and visit our website at pifcoalition.org/publiccharge for more information.

We wish you all a restful Thanksgiving with your loved ones and look forward to working with you all in our fight to protect immigrant families this holiday season and beyond.

Policy Updates: Federal Restrictions on Tax Credits and Housing

Just before Thanksgiving, the Trump administration has issued new guidance to harm immigrants and U.S. citizens in immigrant families. Last week, the United States Department of the Treasury gave notice of intent to deny federal tax credits to families that include lawfully present immigrants, and in Wednesday’s Federal Register, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)  published a notice that effectively denies lawfully present immigrants access to housing programs. “Only this administration would attack immigrant families with low incomes on the day before Thanksgiving. And only this administration would do it in such a reckless way.” Read more in our statements below.

Partner Resource: Know Your Rights Guide for Parents

Parents have a right to make decisions about the care and safety of their children, even while in ICE custody—which is why the National Immigration Law Center and Center for Law and Social Policy developed a new resource for immigrant parents: Know Your Rights: Five Things Parents Detained by ICE Should Know. It details the rights that parents have while being apprehended and detained by ICE to ensure that parents have a say in protecting their children and keeping them safe. Access the resources in English or Spanish via the links below. Additional languages are forthcoming.
