Dear Friend,
Thanksgiving brings us together with loved ones to express gratitude for our many blessings around a delicious meal, prepared in community with friends and family.
This Thanksgiving I'm reminded that food is joy. Food is love. Food is community. Food is a celebration of our cultural diversity. Food is a basic human right.

This Monday and Tuesday, I joined anti-hunger activists in walking 43 miles from Springfield to Greenfield to raise money and awareness for the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. But food banks and soup kitchens aren’t the long term fix to end hunger. That’s why I’m working every day for working families like the one I grew up in to build the political will to end hunger.
In 2022, I teamed up with the Biden-Harris Administration to draft a National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health--a bold roadmap to end hunger and reduce diet-related disease by 2030. We got to work implementing that plan, and started to make some real progress toward improving food security for everyone.
However, the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress gutted our promising work at improving food security and instead tore apart our safety net to fund tax breaks for the richest people in our country.
Trump and his allies in Congress just made the largest cut to food assistance in American history--raiding $186 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by slashing these basic food benefits and cutting veterans, families with teenagers, older adults, homeless people, and former foster youth off of benefits. And Trump is the first president to illegally withhold food benefits from people during the recent Republican shutdown. To me, this is just unquestionably cruel.
Democrats in Congress continue fighting these cuts, just as incredible leaders here in Massachusetts work to implement anti-hunger initiatives locally to support people across our Commonwealth.
We can't give up. Please join me this Thanksgiving in committing to work even harder to improve access to nutritious, local food and end hunger now.
Yours in the fight,
Congressman Jim McGovern
