We’re nervous about this update, John.
The House of Representatives finally held a hearing on congressional stock trading. Though it was full of partisan swipes and backhanded comments, there was a general consensus that something must be done to address congressional stock trading.
So what happens next?
Too many legislators seem content to hang their hat on the fact that a hearing was held, and move on. Rep. Tim Burchett, a representative who has helped lead the charge on a bipartisan effort to ban the trade, has reported that he is not hopeful about legislation on the ban to move forward — but we’re here to hold members of Congress’ feet to the fire to get the job done.
When we started Ban the Trade, the issue of congressional stock trading was barely a blip on the legislative radar. Now, we’ve built a grassroots movement highlighting the importance of this issue for the health of our democracy, and have created momentum in Washington to ban the trade for good.
We’re not slowing down now, John. We’re keeping the pressure up on our representatives to actually ban congressional stock trading — not merely pay lip service to the issue.
This hearing was a solid start, but we can’t afford for legislation to stall out now. Help us keep the pressure on our leaders to ban congressional stock trading by chipping in now:
We’re here until the job is done, no matter how long it takes. Thank you for standing with us in this fight!
Ban The Trade
