Public discourse has the power to bolster our confidence in democratic systems, and it also has the power to erode it. As a society, we need to have confidence in the people in power, the systems that put them there, and our ability to speak out when something isn't right. Without the ability to question, probe, and comment on how our government functions, our democracy would cease to be representative of those it governs.
For the past 25 years, the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) has fought to safeguard public discourse. We work to bring free speech protections to the internet and to keep new technologies free of government censorship. We are also working hard to combat the mis- and disinformation that threatens to undermine our democracy.
At CDT, we are working with companies to push for greater transparency, accountability, and increased equity in content moderation policies. Our lawsuit against President Trump's unconstitutional Executive Order is defending the freedom of platforms to fact check misinformation designed to impede the public's right to vote. We are combating misinformation around the election by training election officials to spot and report inaccurate information, and also elevating underrepresented voices, ensuring that everyone has the power to make change.
