Gov. Beshear Announces $4 Million To Improve Water Service for Over 10,000 Kentucky Homes
"Funds will go to projects in Powell, McLean and Lincoln counties"
*FRANKFORT, Ky. (Nov. 26, 2025)* – Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced $4 million to help improve water service for more than 10,000 Kentucky homes in three communities. The projects include the expansion of a water treatment plant in Powell County, the construction of a new water storage tank in McLean County, and the replacement of over 17,000 feet of waterlines in the city of Hustonville in Lincoln County.
“Clean drinking water is a basic human right,” said *Gov. Beshear*. “On the day before Thanksgiving, it feels good to give our people some good news. These are projects that will just make life better for so many Kentuckians and make sure our people are taken care of. Happy Thanksgiving, Kentucky.”
Funding for the projects comes from Team Kentucky’s Community Development Block Grant [ [link removed] ] (CDBG) program.
*Powell County Fiscal Court*
Gov. Beshear committed $1.5 million to the Powell County Fiscal Court to help expand the Beech Fork Water Treatment Plant. The plant currently processes 2 million gallons of water per-day. This expansion will allow the plant to process 3 million gallons per day. The project will also make improvements to the raw water intake system and rehabilitate a water storage tank.
The water treatment plant provides water to the cities of Clay City and Stanton as well as the Powell Valley Water District. The project will improve service to nearly 8,000 households.
“As Powell County continues to grow, we need our water infrastructure to fit our needs,” said *Powell County Judge/Executive Eddie Barnes*. “This grant will help us expand our water treatment plant and make sure our people never have to worry about having enough clean drinking water.”
*McLean County Fiscal Court*
Gov. Beshear committed $1.25 million to the McLean County Fiscal Court to help build a new water storage tank and over 5,000 feet of waterline, connecting the tank to the water system. The new tank will have a capacity of 250,000 gallons, allowing for adequate supply to the system.
This project will improve service for 591 households.
“This news is very welcome the day before Thanksgiving,” said *McLean County Judge/Executive Curtis Dame*. “The ability to have access to a dependable water supply is a basic need of all of our citizens, one that the McLean County Fiscal Court continues to strengthen through cooperative efforts.”
*City of Hustonville*
Gov. Beshear committed $1.25 million to the city of Hustonville to help replace over 17,000 feet of waterline and install 800 new water meters. The existing system has experienced two waterline breaks over the past year. Replacing these aging lines will ensure stability in the water system.
The project will improve service for nearly 1,800 Kentucky households.
“This money will allow the city of Hustonville to modernize our critical water infrastructure,” said *Hustonville Mayor Tim Smith*. “This is a project that many won’t see, but our people’s lives will be better for it. Our thanks to our state government for this welcome news.”
*About the CDBG Program*
The CDBG program helps communities revitalize neighborhoods, expand affordable housing and economic opportunities, provide infrastructure and/or improve community facilities and services. With the participation of their citizens, communities can devote these funds to a wide range of activities that best serve their own development priorities.
