Dear Friend,

Last Thursday, Leader Stacey Abrams and Dr. Michelle Sternthal (Community Catalyst’s Director of Government Affairs) joined us for our November Community Zoom Meeting. Thank you to everyone who joined us—we were so excited to see you!

Even though the government shutdown is over, many families are still struggling financially, especially when it comes to health care. Starting on January 1st, some of the tax credits that help families buy health insurance under the Affordable Care Act are set to run out. Open enrollment started on November 1st and families have already begun going to HealthCare.gov to renew or choose a plan. But this year, many families will find the cost of their coverage has doubled or even tripled! In the recently passed spending bill, Republicans in Congress left out critical insurance tax credits that millions use to buy coverage. These skyrocketing premiums will force many to choose between paying for insurance or other household necessities, or pushing families out of coverage altogether.

MomsRising members heard directly from Leader Stacey Abrams about what the loss of federal health subsidies could mean for their family, shared personal stories with her about how the current changes to health care are impacting them, and connected with one another to find out how we can come together to take action in our communities.

We are very grateful for our MomsRising team members Kristin, Katrina, Felicia, Donna, Ruth, Olivia, Catalina, and Diarra for organizing this powerful conversation! And the biggest thank you goes to every participant who listened, offered their experiences, asked thoughtful questions, and was in community with us.

Spotlight: Be sure to check out your insurance coverage options at healthcare.gov

  2. Get Peace of Mind: Comprehensive coverage & consumer protections haven’t changed. Accidents can happen anytime —get peace of mind knowing you’re covered if the unexpected happens. When enrolling in an ACA plan, you will never be asked about your medical history. The only factors that influence the price of your plan are your geography, age, and whether or not you are a smoker.

  3. Check your options. Plans and prices change every year, so it’s important to check out your options and see what’s available, even if you’ve looked before.
