John,
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has just confirmed that Dr. Ralph Abraham, formerly a surgeon general of Louisiana and federal representative, has been appointed second-in-command.
It’s no surprise that the administration never publicly announced this hire—because Abraham’s views on everything from vaccines to abortion are deeply unpopular and downright dangerous.
Just a peek at his extreme track record:
- While serving as Louisiana’s secretary of health last year, he supported legislation classifying abortion medications as ‘controlled substances,' a move that endangers miscarriage patients and criminalizes care.
- During his (unsuccessful) 2019 campaign for governor, he made attacking abortion rights a centerpiece of his candidacy.
- While in Congress, he proudly referred to himself as “100% pro-life,” advocating to defund Planned Parenthood, and cosponsored legislation to give full human rights to fetuses.
Just weeks ago, pro-choice women delivered a clear mandate at the polls, showing up to elect pro-choice candidates and sweeping races from Georgia to Virginia to New Jersey and beyond.
But that hasn’t stopped anti-choice extremists from quietly making nefarious moves, and this latest appointment is a sobering reminder to watch what they do, not what they say.
In 2026, we’re anticipating further restriction of medication abortion by the Trump administration, affecting all of us, no matter what state we’re in. That makes this addition to the C.D.C. particularly alarming.
Anti-choice extremists know that their positions are unpopular, which is why they quietly launch attacks away from cameras and microphones. But we won’t let this go unnoticed—and when voters know about attacks on our fundamental freedoms, they show up to hold politicians accountable.
Thank you for being with us.
