Extracting oil and gas from beneath the ocean will harm millions of coastal residents and devastate countless ecosystems: [link removed]

Dear Friend,

The Trump administration is trying to unleash an offshore drilling plan that would jeopardize treasured coastlines nationwide — and we have an opportunity to voice our opposition. [link removed]

The proposed plan would auction off a staggering 1.27 billion acres of public waters all across the country for oil and gas development. Vast areas offshore of Alaska, the Gulf Coast of Florida, and California could all see new oil drilling rigs.

This proposal significantly increases the number of scheduled offshore oil sales, threatening precious beaches and sensitive ocean areas with the risk of oil spills if drilling plans go forward. It would also commit us to decades more fossil fuel production when the climate crisis demands we rapidly transition away from fossil fuels to avoid increasingly lethal heat waves, extreme weather events like more severe storms, and greater sea level rise.

The United States is already producing more oil than any other nation in history. And the oil industry is already in possession of millions of acres of public waters, while the vast majority of its active leases have yet to start producing oil and gas. But the Trump administration wants to ramp up fossil fuel extraction anyway by dramatically expanding offshore oil and gas drilling in the U.S. – even auctioning off areas that have long been protected.

This move would not benefit the American taxpayer or lower gas prices. After all, the majority of the oil the U.S. produces now gets exported. Instead, Trump’s offshore drilling plan would pad the wallets of the oil industry and other corporate polluters while bringing irreversible harm to our communities and fast-tracking more climate disasters. The Trump administration has a legal obligation to consider the potential effects of offshore drilling on humans and the environment. That’s where you come in.

The government’s obligations include providing the public with the right to weigh in on the future of offshore oil and gas leasing. Remind the administration of the dangers of drilling off our coasts. Submit your comment today. [link removed]

Coastal economies depend on healthy and clean oceans. Offshore drilling increases the threat of catastrophic oil spills. Oil spills impact thousands of jobs, from tourism to commercial fishing, cause long-lasting harm to wildlife and ecosystems, and cost billions of dollars in economic losses. Every oil spill off our coasts, like the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and the devastating 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, began with an offshore oil sale. Our communities and our environment cannot handle another one.

More offshore drilling also exposes coastal communities to more toxic air pollution. Communities where offshore drilling already happens are burdened by some of the highest rates of cancer and respiratory illnesses in the country.

Earthjustice is prepared to defend coastal communities, our vital ecosystems, and the millions of people who could be harmed by oil and gas drilling off their coasts. And we need you with us.

We have 60 days to speak up for the health of our coastlines and those who depend on them. Tell the Trump administration: No new offshore oil and gas leasing. [link removed]

Sincerely,
Danika Desai
