** Level up your leadership this holiday season
------------------------------------------------------------

Happy Thanksgiving week! We're grateful for the chance to support 60% of academy alumni ([link removed]) who've grown into new or expanded leadership roles.

Know a woman or nonbinary media leader ready for their next chapter? Help them take that step.

Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women ([link removed]) has spent the past decade prepping managers to pilot the changing modern newsroom, and applications close Monday, Dec. 15 for the next cohort.

This weeklong workshop teaches 40 media managers to lead more effectively, communicate their strategic vision with clarity and navigate organizational challenges with renewed confidence. The lasting impact? Joining a global alumni network of 650+ leaders who continue to mentor and support each other long after they leave our campus.

🆕 Leadership Academy for Women ([link removed]) participants earn 36 Professional Development Units recognized by the Project Management Institute — 8 in Ways of Working, 24 in Power Skills and 4 in Business Acumen. For certified project managers, this means your leadership development counts toward required continuing education.

Poynter's authorized PMI partnership lets you earn credits while building critical skills. Watch for PDUs in more courses soon.

“This was truly a meaningful experience for me. I saw the intention with which this program was run and hope that I can provide that kind of care and consideration for my team and everyone in my professional orbit going forward.” – Amy McKeever, National Geographic, 2025 Leadership Academy for Women graduate

Invest in yourself or nominate someone exceptional. Apply by Dec. 15 ([link removed]) for this opportunity for gratitude and growth.

** TIP OF THE WEEK
------------------------------------------------------------

By Alex Mahadevan ([link removed]) , Faculty; Director, MediaWise

Over the last few months, I’ve taught generative AI ethics and literacy to hundreds of journalists and media professionals from Alabama to Egypt. One thing stands out: Few organizations have AI ethics guidelines.

That’s troubling because your audience wants AI policies, according to a large scale study Poynter did with the University of Minnesota. And it seems every week we witness an AI-related mishap at a news organization — which continues to fray the tenuous trust we have left with our readers.

When crafting a policy, start with your values. Your ethics guidelines — and AI principles — should be downstream from those. For example:
* Fairness as a value might lead you to create an AI steering committee with diverse members from across the newsroom to develop guidelines. And conduct regular bias audits to make sure your use isn’t unfair to certain communities.
* Transparency means a strategy for disclosing when and where you use AI. The more public and AI-assisted, the more transparent you should be.
* Accountability means you should have a corrections policy and consequences when a reporter or editor runs afoul of your policy.
* And a very specific example: If environmental sustainability is among your values, consider guardrails against excessive use of paid AI models, and guidance for using open-source models on your own computers.

Change is hard. Especially in the media industry. But, AI guidelines can be a useful springboard to prepare your organization or team upheaval the technology will bring — and it’s easier than you think.

💡 Poynter has a free guide ([link removed]) to developing your own AI ethics policy, and offers consulting ([link removed]) to help manage adoption of AI and emerging technologies.
