John, Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg just shouted out our plan to defeat Citizens United!
The former Secretary of Transportation, in conversation with The Atlantic editor Jeff Goldberg, addressed The Montana Plan at the Texas Tribune Festival:
“Interesting things are happening across the country… Montana is trying to address this through attention to what a corporation can and can’t do, because that’s actually decided at the state level. So instead of working it at the ‘speech’ side of the equation, they’re working at the ‘what is a corporation’ side of the equation.”
Buttigieg hit the nail on the head — Citizens United decision closed the door on using campaign finance reform to limit corporate influence in our politics. That’s why we developed a new legal strategy using corporation law to revoke corporations' political spending powers as non-human entities.
With two centuries of Supreme Court rulings working in our favor, we’re working to pass a ballot initiative and enshrine these rights in our state constitution. This would become the legal blueprint for all 49 other states to do the same.
We’re going through the legal process to qualify for the ballot, and soon, we’ll be lacing up our boots to collect 100,000 signatures across the state. We know our neighbors want to curb corporate influence on our politics and end the dark money loophole for good, and we hope you do, too.
More and more folks are learning about The Montana Plan and joining our team every day — will you help us keep the momentum going?
We’re asking you for $20, $8, or even just $3 today to fuel our fight and get undue corporate influence out of our politics. Please, chip in what you can today:
Thank you for joining our grassroots movement today. We’ll keep you posted on every new development of The Montana Plan!
