“I don’t understand how we’re still having this debate, we’re in a health
care crisis. We need a health care solution. It’s obvious to anyone that
employer-tied health care doesn’t work.”
-Rep. Ro Khanna (CA-17), on last night’s Summer Strategy Call
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last night, we had several thousand people tune in to our Medicare for All
Summer Strategy Call. We missed you on the call, but this email has
everything you need to jump in and get up to speed, so please take a few
minutes to read it carefully.
The COVID-19 crisis calls for nothing less than a summer of movement
building to bring in thousands of new activists into the fight for
Medicare for All – that’s exactly what we are doing, and we need you to
join us.
Here is what this movement strategy needs to look like over the next few
months and how you can plug in:
1. Help grow the movement: While we cannot safely gather in person or
knock on doors in our neighborhoods, one of the most powerful things
we can be doing right now is talk to people within our own existing
networks – our friends, family, neighbors, coworkers – about Medicare
for All.
We’re launching a new program called “Movement Builders,” and we need
you to join. To start, we’re hosting training calls to review how to
have effective conversations, and we’ll provide you with written
materials and guides. We’ve even got an app to help you out. [ [link removed] ]RSVP
for an upcoming call here.
2. Get educated: Our incredible Education Department at NNU is offering
mass public education webinars on various broad social and political
themes related to the COVID-19 pandemic. [ [link removed] ]Sign up for a webinar
here.
3. Hold legislators accountable: We checked, and your Congress Member is
already a co-sponsor of the Medicare for All Act of 2019, so this
doesn’t apply to you – but we want you to be in the loop anyway. For
everyone in a district of a non-co-sponsor, we’re asking folks to hold
virtual legislative meetings with their members during the August
Recess.
4. Participate in the Aug. 22 Day of Action: We’re calling for a national
Medicare for All Day of Action for later this summer, and we need
every single person on this call to commit to joining us on that day
to take action. [ [link removed] ]Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 22, now.
If you’ve never done anything like this before, don’t worry. We’ll be
offering group training calls, written guides and materials, and lots of
one-on-one support.
If you’re wondering where to start, joining our Movement Builders program
is one of the most impactful things you can do right now. We know this
strategy works. Having
conversations with people you know is scientifically proven to be more
effective at persuading people and moving them into action than
conversations with strangers. Why? Because people in your circle consider
you to be a trusted messenger.
Ask yourself: Who are people you know who would be primed to have a
conversation about Medicare for All?
Maybe someone who has recently lost their health insurance; or someone who
has a family member or friend who has COVID and hasn’t been able to get
the care they need to fully recover; or someone who is a nurse, a teacher,
or other frontline worker putting themselves at risk to help people every
single day during this pandemic.
Once you identify these people in your life, you’ll reach out to them
however you normally would – maybe you call your mom; text your cousin;
Facebook message your friend. We’ll help you through the rest.
[ [link removed] ]The first step is to sign up now for a training, and we’ll get you
everything you need to get started.
With thanks,
