As Advent approaches, a time when we Catholics wait for Christmas and the joy of Jesus’ birth, it’s important to remember that some things can’t wait. For refugee families in Lebanon, time is running out to get the vital fuel and supplies they need to survive the winter.
Mariam is a 72-year-old Palestinian mother. She lived in Syria for 50 years before fighting there forced her to flee to a refugee camp in eastern Lebanon. Shelter is basic and work is hard to come by, leaving her family with little money to heat their freezing home.
“The weather is so cold,” she says. “I'm sitting out shivering. If we burn the fuel now, how can we use the heater at night? We need to spare some fuel for nighttime. The night is long.”
With the temperatures plummeting, people like Mariam can’t wait any longer for the supplies they need to survive the cold and that’s why I am writing to you today. You could help families get the urgent support they need to survive the harshest conditions this winter. Just £16 could buy enough fuel to help a family heat their home for two nights.
Your donation this Advent is so vital to families facing the harshest conditions. You can help a mother like Mariam keep her family warm until the snow melts.
Thank you so much,
The CAFOD team
