Dear Friend,
As many of us prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s important to remember that we all need to take action to prevent hunger in our communities and across the nation. Earlier this month, millions of moms experienced hunger, panic, and harm to their families when SNAP benefits (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also called Food Stamps or EBT) were callously delayed and appealed by Trump and his administration despite court orders mandating that they fully fund SNAP during the shutdown, using contingency and reserve funds. [1]
We can’t let Trump and Republican leaders in Congress send moms, dads, and grandparents scrambling to put food on the table for their children again, and alarmingly, we know more cuts are in store for SNAP!
What’s happening?
Now that the immediate crisis is over, we are turning our attention to the broader, long-term threats to SNAP. While SNAP has long had strong bi-partisan support due to its track record of boosting the economy and families alike, the budget reconciliation law (OBBB) passed last summer by Republicans and signed into law by Trump cut $187 billion to SNAP– the largest cut ever to the country’s first line of defense against hunger. [2] Soon, millions of people will permanently lose their benefits, businesses will be undermined, and our economy as a whole will suffer.
We heard from moms across the country during the shutdown about how critical SNAP is for their families. Moms like Tanya in Bartow, FL, who wrote on Oct. 28:
“I have two kids under two and it’s very hard to find employment right now. I depend on SNAP benefits every month to feed me and my kids. We are going to be without food. This is the only way that I’m able to feed my family, through SNAP benefits. It really is devastating.”
The SNAP benefit delays during the shutdown reveal how critical SNAP benefits are for our economy and also for the 42 million people who use them to take care of their families, contribute to their communities, and build good lives.
The Restoring Food Security for American Families and Farmers Act of 2025 was just introduced in both the U.S. House and the Senate. This legislation reverses the devastating cuts to SNAP made last summer in the OBBB, which is the “Big Bill” passed by Trump and Republican members of Congress.
SNAP is not only essential for families, it’s also important for our communities and the economy. Each dollar in federally funded SNAP benefits generates $1.79 in economic activity, boosting farmers, retailers, and the economy. [3] The harm caused by the SNAP cuts will ripple across the economy. Over the next 6 months, the SNAP cuts will decrease sales for small grocers by as much as 6.7%. Over the next decade, the decline in household food purchases will cause farmers to lose roughly $24 billion, which is an enormous loss for farmers! [4]
While SNAP has long had strong bi-partisan support due to its track record of boosting the economy and families alike, instead of lifting families and our economy Trump’s Big Bill (OBBB) cuts food assistance by a staggering 20% in order to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and to fund policies that separate families, violate human rights, and target hardworking immigrants—people who are essential to our care workforce, our agricultural workforce, our economy, and our future. [5] Hardworking families are already facing high grocery prices and stagnating job growth and wages; now is NOT the time to cut food access for millions of people!
Together we are a powerful voice for children and families!
