When I first ran for office, I promised the people of Milwaukee that I would never forget where I came from.

I grew up in Milwaukee as the eighth of nine children in a working-class home. My father was a factory worker, and my mother was a public school teacher. They stretched every dollar, taught us dignity and compassion, and showed me what it means to work hard.

Those lessons stayed with me as I got older, especially when life took an unexpected turn. Before I was a Congresswoman, before the committees and the votes, I was a single, expectant mother who relied on welfare and food assistance to keep my family afloat. It was hard, but I worked harder, stayed in school, and earned my degree from Marquette University.

Those experiences shaped who I am now. They ground me. They remind me that government can be a stabilizing force when families need it most, and that every person deserves a fair shot at opportunity.

I’m proud of the progress we’ve made since I first came to Congress, but there’s so much more to do. Today, I see many families facing the same struggles that I did: rising costs, low wages, unaffordable childcare, and a system that still fails Black and brown communities.

The truth is, we won’t move forward while Republicans control Congress. That’s why we must elect more Democrats up and down the ballot here in Wisconsin so we can take back the House in 2026. Our ability to deliver for working families depends on it.
