It’s Sarah Trone Garriott here! I want to share a special story (and recipe) with you.

One thing you should know about me is that I love to bake. There’s something special about connecting with others – and even better when you can do it over a treat you made just for them!

This story begins with a woman named Ann, who I met when I was called to a parish in rural western Virginia. For years, Ann was the one who had done all the visiting of church members, especially those who couldn’t get out to church. But just before I arrived at the parish, Ann had given up her driver’s license and couldn’t drive to visit anyone.

I have always believed in the importance of showing up for everyone, so as their minister, I picked up the parish directory and visited every member of the church with Ann. Ann would bake cream puffs for each household we visited. Then, at the end of the day, when I dropped her off at home, Ann would finally give me a cream puff too.

Whenever I think about Ann, I’m reminded of how much good one person can do in our community. And how even a small gesture – like a visit or a homemade treat – can let us find a moment of connection.

That’s the same attitude I have brought to all of my campaigns since, and it’s why I put so much value on having genuine conversations with the people I serve – because at the end of the day, this job is about representing your family's needs, and that starts with showing up in our community.
