Watch CCL's national call with Dr. Renee Lertzman

On our national call last Saturday, we were joined by Dr. Renee Lertzman, an environmental psychologist who shared her approach to dealing with the emotional trauma of climate change.

The first step in working through that anxiety is feeling that we are truly being heard, said Dr. Lertzman. "There's something that happens when we hear the words 'of course.' We feel that our experience is validated... that is the basis for moving forward into action."

On the call, we also heard some exciting developments on legislation our volunteers have been working on — the Energy Innovation Act, which has gained a new cosponsor since our June lobby meetings, as well as the Growing Climate Solutions Act to spread the use of climate-smart farming methods and the RECLAIM Act to help create jobs in distressed coal communities.

Watch the July national call to hear more from Dr. Lertzman and get our legislative updates.

Appreciated stock an excellent gift option

Your time, your passion, and your advocacy are significant contributions that help ensure a healthy climate for future generations. If you are able to invest more, you may consider making a gift of appreciated stock to Citizens’ Climate Education (CCE) or Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL)

Gifting stock makes meaningful use of your patience and foresight, while also providing tax benefits. Gifts of stock to CCE, a 501(c)(3) organization, serve as a tax-deductible charitable contribution and avoid capital gains taxes. Gifts to CCL, a 501(c)(4) organization, are not tax-deductible, but still avoid capital gains taxes.

As every financial situation is different, we recommend consulting a financial advisor about the specific terms of your gift. For more information, please see our website or contact Senior Development Director, Lynate Pettengill at [email protected] or 785-331-5556.

Media: Virtual lobby meeting makes news

When CCL’s Jacksonville chapter put the word out about participating in the June virtual conference and meeting online with Republican Rep. John Rutherford (shown above), they caught the attention of WJCT-FM. The radio station aired a report about the conference and meeting and also published a story on the station’s website. The story quoted volunteer Larry Zwain, who said, “We hope to see Rep. Rutherford cosponsor the Energy Innovation Act. This policy will greatly benefit our economy, our health, and our futures here in Jacksonville.”

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the media lever like these volunteers did, watch or read this training on generating media coverage.

Austin, Texas, puts a price on carbon: By putting a small price on carbon, the city is on track for zero-carbon electricity by 2035. This is a great example of how a market-based incentive can lead to big reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Read more.
