Americans for Peace Now: July 15, 2020

QUOTE

"You have to be both immoral and a fool to stop this construction of a COVID-19 testing site, on private land nonetheless."

Peace Now, in a statement [ [link removed] ] released today regarding the Israeli authorities moving in to shut down a crucial Palestinian COVID-19 testing site, set up a few days ago at the entrance of Hebron, one of the hardest hit areas in the West Bank.

Hard Questions, Tough Answers with Yossi Alpher [ [link removed] ]

July 13, 2020 - Peter Beinart no longer believes in a Jewish state [ [link removed] ]

Yossi Alpher is an independent security analyst. Views and positions expressed here are those of the writer, and do not necessarily represent APN's views and policy positions.

Q. Why do you want to deal with Beinart's recent NYT article advocating a democratic one-state solution in Israel/Palestine? Are Israelis persuaded? Interested?

A. ...Beinart's article should be understood in Israel as a stark and eloquent warning of the extent to which the gap between the world's two great Jewish communities is widening, not the least due to misbegotten Israeli policies...

Q. Why is Beinart disconnected from Israeli realities?

A. ...For most Israelis and Palestinians, it [two-state solution] slid off the agenda at least a decade ago...

Q. Well, here Beinart asserts that a Jewish state "is not the essence of Zionism". Rather, the essence is "a thriving Jewish society that can provide refuge and rejuvenation for Jews". That, he argues, is possible in the Land of Israel within a binational Jewish-Arab state.

A. This is indeed the essence of Beinart's argument...

Q. Are you suggesting that this is what Beinart's binational state would look like. He says it will be democratic. He compares it to Northern Ireland and South Africa, both democratic. He says Lebanon is a bad comparison because Israel is more advanced.

A. ...its ultimate resolution defies comparison to the world's multiethnic and multi-confessional sovereign solutions...

Q. Not democratic and egalitarian?

A. Not for long. Veteran and new Arab citizens of Israel-Palestine would combine political forces to pressure for "return" of millions of great-grandchildren of the 1948 refugees...

Q. But if the two-state solution is dead and Israel is in any case sliding down a slippery slope toward apartheid, why not hold up the alternative of a democratic binational state. Surely that is a better end-game.

A. Yes, the current reality is grim. And yes, it looks like it will get worse. But that does not make Beinart's imagined alternative better...

Zoom Briefing: "Annex and Dispossess: Peace Now's Hagit Ofran on her New Report"
Thursday, July 23, 2:00 pm Eastern

Israel's Absentee Property Law is used to dispossess Palestinians of their properties in East Jerusalem and transfer their homes to settlers.

Hagit Ofran of Peace Now's Settlement Watch team will lay out the way in which Israeli authorities use this law now, and how it could be used if Israel annexes in the West Bank, particularly the Jordan Valley.

Hagit Ofran is the co-director of Settlement Watch, a project of Shalom Achshav (Peace Now). She has two decades of expertise on issues related to settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
