Herbert: I lost.

In my very first election back in 2010, I lost by just over 1 percentage point.

I could've thrown in the towel right then and there. But instead, I made a choice. I embodied the grit and determination I see in so many Americans and picked myself up and tried again.

I put everything I had into that race —and won, holding a critical seat for Democrats and becoming Illinois' first Indian-American Congressman.

Serving the people of Illinois' 8th District has been the greatest honor of my life so far. But I'm ready to be a voice for every American.

With a democracy that's crumbling before our very eyes thanks to MAGA extremists, we can't take any race, especially not this one, for granted. There's no such thing as a safe blue seat while Donald Trump and his far-right allies are in control.

I know what it means to win – and what it means to fall short. 

Winning this race and taking back the Senate is going to require friends, families, and neighbors coming together, volunteering, knocking on doors, and chipping in a few dollars when they can.
