Despite impassioned pleas and people organizing for months to demand the
Democratic National Committee sanction a climate-focused debate for this
primary, the DNC over the weekend voted down a resolution that would
have made a debate possible.
To put it mildly—and for anyone concerned about the future of the
planet—this is infuriating. While opponents said it would be "dangerous"
to upset the rules of the primary debate schedule, author, journalist,
and longtime friend and ally to Common Dreams Naomi Klein disagreed:
"This matters. A DNC that won't bend the rules of its debate playbook in
order to treat climate change like an emergency will not support policy
that is transformative enough to actually stop the emergency."
And Princeton University professor Keeanga Yamahtta Taylor put it this
way:
"This past July was the hottest in human history. The temp reached 94
degrees in the Arctic Circle. Temps reached 114 in France. Temps in
India reached 120. The crisis is not coming. We are here. It's the most
crucial question facing the human species. What is the DNC afraid of?"
It's a crucial question.
We have been covering this fight since groups such as Sunrise Movement,
350.org, and others started demanding a climate debate months ago, and
we won't stop covering the climate emergency until leaders from all
political parties across the world treat it with the urgency it demands.
The DNC just failed all of us, but we won't fail you.
