Last week, Michigan’s governor extended the state’s moratorium on water shutoffs to protect people in that state a little longer.

While this is good news for Michigan residents, it also highlights a sad fact: State water shutoff moratoria across the country can — and will — expire if we don’t act. We must demand that Congress pass a national moratorium on water shutoffs now.

Thanks to your support and your actions, 15 states and nearly 700 localities have suspended water shutoffs, protecting 206 million people so far. But unfortunately, too many states are still refusing to stop water shutoffs. That means people across the country can’t follow the simple — and crucial — advice to slow the spread of the coronavirus, because they don’t have any water to wash their hands.

Before the pandemic, our nation was already facing a water affordability crisis:

- 15 million people in the United States experienced a water shutoff in a typical year.

- Approximately 15 percent of residential water customers nationally are constantly burdened by unaffordable water bills.

- In recent years, cities big and small all across the United States have experienced severe rate increases to their water and wastewater utility bills.These jarring numbers have certainly skyrocketed during the COVID-19 crisis, as unemployment soars and families struggle to meet basic needs.

A few weeks ago, the House of Representatives endorsed a national moratorium on water service disconnections with service restoration as part of the HEROES Act, the latest coronavirus stimulus package. While the bill is imperfect, its water service elements are necessary. But right now the bill is stalled in the Senate.

That’s why this month we’ve set a goal to raise $20,000 to launch a massive campaign to call out Mitch McConnell and do-nothing senators. We demand that the Senate majority leader act quickly to deliver on the human right to water by allowing a vote on a national water shutoff moratorium with service restoration for all. We know we can change enough minds in Washington, D.C. to make a difference. We can’t leave any community without water.
