The great Coretta Scott King reminds us that freedom is never really won. We must earn it and win it in every generation. So when someone says that our vision for a more just country is “unrealistic,” I ask them to imagine saying that to the abolitionists who ended slavery.
And the suffragists who won the 19th Amendment.
And the freedom fighters who delivered the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.
The people with the clearest visions of transformative change are the ones who get told to give up. To not even bother.
But where would be today if they had listened to the skeptics?
Instead of accepting that it’s “unrealistic” to guarantee food, healthcare, and housing as human rights, I’m fighting to make it unrealistic for any of our babies to go hungry, our elders to go without healthcare, and our neighbors to go unhoused.
