Dear Friend --
We know we just sent you an email but
we had some breaking news we have to share. I’m very excited
to let you know that Botswana has just become the 40th state to ratify
the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons!
This means that the treaty only needs 10 more
ratifications to enter into force, making nuclear weapons
illegal under international law. The timing of this ratification is
extra important because, just weeks from now, the world will mark the
75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
We hope Botswana's ratification will inspire many
other states to take action for a nuclear-weapons-free world and
ensure the treaty hits the 50-mark as soon as possible.
Will you help power our campaigners’ work
to make the next 10 ratifications happen? To mark this symbolic year,
we are looking for 75 people to commit to making monthly
donations of $75, and 75 people to commit to giving $7 per
month. Recurring donations provide more stable and
predictable funding that will help us support our campaigners’
long-term strategies. By making a donation to ICAN’s work on the 75th
anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, you can
help make a historic moment happen - the moment nuclear weapons become
illegal.
Yes, I'll become a champion!
It’s encouraging that progress continues
to be made towards entry into force despite the severe impacts of the
COVID-19 pandemic. As Fiji remarked when it ratified the treaty last
week, disarmament has become more important than ever as
governments are faced with stark choices over the allocation of
precious resources. We must invest not in armaments but in the
well-being of humanity.
Sincerely,
Tim Wright Treaty Coordinator
