We know we just sent you an email but we had some breaking news we have to share. I’m very excited to let you know that Botswana has just become the 40th state to ratify the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons!



This means that the treaty only needs 10 more ratifications to enter into force, making nuclear weapons illegal under international law. The timing of this ratification is extra important because, just weeks from now, the world will mark the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.



We hope Botswana's ratification <[link removed]> will inspire many other states to take action for a nuclear-weapons-free world and ensure the treaty hits the 50-mark as soon as possible.

It’s encouraging that progress continues to be made towards entry into force despite the severe impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Fiji remarked when it ratified the treaty last week <[link removed]>, disarmament has become more important than ever as governments are faced with stark choices over the allocation of precious resources. We must invest not in armaments but in the well-being of humanity.
