John,
When Republicans passed their Big Ugly Bill―handing trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the rich and corporations―they flat out refused to renew expiring Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits.
These tax credits, or subsidies, have been keeping health insurance more affordable for roughly 20 million people on the ACA exchange. Without those tax credits, healthcare premiums will skyrocket―more than doubling for most people. Americans for Tax Fairness research shows that the January 1st rise in healthcare costs will completely wipe out any tax benefit working people were potentially getting from Trump’s tax scam.[1]
While households making over $1 million a year are expected to get a tax cut of almost $100,000 in 2027, the average family is expected to receive just $1,500 next year. But, a single working person earning $62,000 a year will see their health insurance premiums rise by an average of $1,470 next year. For people in a family or closer to Medicare age, the spike in healthcare costs will be much more severe.
There goes that supposed tax cut.
But now, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has introduced a discharge petition to force a vote on extending the ACA tax credits. He’s up to 210 signers, meaning he only needs 8 more in order to force a vote.

Healthcare costs are eating away every dollar of progress that working families have made. Restoring these ACA subsidies is one of the fastest, most direct ways Congress can protect household budgets.
The contrast could not be clearer. Billionaires have seen their wealth soar by trillions since the first Trump tax law, while ordinary people are being told to tighten their belts and accept higher costs. Congress has the power to reverse this. By renewing the ACA subsidies, lawmakers can prove they are willing to stand with the families they represent instead of the corporate interests that fund their campaigns.
And, while the Senate has promised a vote on the ACA tax credits sometime in December, Speaker Johnson has made no such promise in the House. We need to force his hand.

Let’s stand together for affordable healthcare.
