Trump’s cuts to the Department of Education have left civil rights protections for students in limbo.
Friend,
Because of Donald Trump and his administration’s drastic cuts to the Department of Education, civil rights protections for students in Pennsylvania are in limbo.
Massive budget cuts at the federal level have severely impacted the federal Office for Civil Rights. Nearly half of the staff have been laid off, and offices, including the one in Philadelphia, have been closed. Now, our region’s civil rights cases must go to Atlanta, where they may or may not be heard.
This has created a dangerous void, leaving students who face discrimination with fewer accessible resources for justice. We cannot stand by and let this happen.
As the minority chair of the Senate Education Committee, I am working on legislation to establish an Office of Civil Rights within the Pennsylvania Department of Education. My goal is clear: to create new authorities at the state level to investigate civil rights violations and protect our students.
