When the coronavirus pandemic hit, LIRS knew we had to take action for the immigrant and refugee community. Our New American family was hit hard by COVID-19 and its effects; many lost their jobs in the service, hospitality, and agricultural industries, while many more risked their lives on the front line in healthcare and food service. Many of our immigrant brothers and sisters were excluded from government stimulus packages, while others were hesitant to get medical care for fear of retribution.

We established Neighbors in Need as an emergency fund to serve these unique needs. Through the fund, we were able to provide emergency financial assistance to at-risk families who have suffered illness, job loss, or other hardship due to the crisis. Please see the graphic below for information on how the funds were distributed.

The fight isn’t over. As the pandemic continues, our refugee and immigrant neighbors still need our help. While we know that the need continues, however, the funds have been fully expended, and we have had to pause the application process for now. As COVID-19 continues to affect our communities, LIRS remains committed to responding to our most vulnerable clients and has submitted a number of grant applications to continue the fund.
