Americans give the Social Security Administration our personal information to access the retirement benefits we’ve earned – not so the government can secretly repurpose it to question our citizenship, deny our right to vote, or invade our privacy.
By making all our data accessible in one giant system, the administration is breaking our trust and putting us at serious risk. One breach, one misuse, and millions of people could have their most sensitive information exposed. Worse, the government could start to weaponize our own data against us for their own ends.
And the damage has already started. States like Texas are already using this flawed system to purge voters from the rolls – all with data that’s notoriously inaccurate, especially for the naturalized citizens that Trump’s voter purges are most likely to target. [2]
Right now, Common Cause is taking legal action to push back against Trump’s attempts to demand states turn over all of voters’ most sensitive data. We’re suing to stop the handover of voter data [3], intervening in federal cases [4], and finding voters who were already wrongfully purged.
