On Sunday, May 31st, Headwaters responded to the murder of George Floyd by setting up The Transformation Fund <[link removed]>. We wanted to move money quickly to frontline organizations as they kept fighting against an ongoing culture of institutional violence and white supremacy. We also wanted to support the long-term movement work for real change required for our collective liberation.

Two longtime, trusted Headwaters donors pledged a combined total of $ 2 million in early June to seed the Fund. They gave us full permission to flexibly use those dollars, which helped us inspire donors at all levels to give. We recently made general operating grants to organizations using The Transformation Fund support. These first investments prioritize groups that led by and for Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color (BIPOC).

Executive Director Maria De La Cruz said, "The fact is, organizers have been working for racial justice for generations. The wins we see today—notably led by BIPOC youth and young adults—are examples of what it means to build power with and in community. Rapid response grantmaking at Headwaters tunes us in to real-time needs and lets us get grant dollars to where they will be most helpful."
