I never imagined I would need to write an email like this.

This week, Donald Trump publicly called for the death, arrest, and violence against Members of Congress who have served this country. There is no circumstance — none — in which threats or violence against public servants are acceptable. These Members didn’t break the law, and they didn’t betray their oath. They simply reminded the nation of a truth every service member understands.

No one is ever required to follow an illegal order.

I first swore my oath to the Constitution when I entered the United States Army. I swore it again when I was elected to Congress. And I swore it yet again as Maryland’s Attorney General.

So let me be clear: I will not be intimidated by Donald Trump or his calls for violence. And I will continue to uphold my oath regardless of the threats or political pressure.
